For a limited time ESDU ASTEROID is available as a free trial. Sign up for a free trial... We are pleased to invite new and existing ASTEROID users to free training sessions where our team of experts will show how to use ASTEROID and answer any and all questions. Sign up for training..
The ASTEROID Collection brings together various ESDU Data Items for the calculation of excrescence drag due to steps, ridges, grooves and cavities on the external surfaces of aircraft.
The methods given in the associated ESDU Data Items are presented in a single piece of software, the ASTEROID Drag Tool. See the 'Software' tab for full details.
This Collection contains:
Aircraft Surface Tolerances for Enhanced Repair, Operations and Design
Section 1: Introductory Data Items
Section 2: ESDU Methods included in ASTEROID
Drag due to a circular cavity in a plate with a turbulent boundary layer at subsonic, transonic and supersonic speeds
Drag due to grooves in a flat plate with a turbulent boundary layer, at subsonic and supersonic speeds
Drag of two-dimensional steps and ridges immersed in a turbulent boundary layer for Mach numbers up to 3.
- ESDU 74036
Section 3: Example Hand Calculation
Examples of excrescence drag prediction for typical wing components of a subsonic transport aircraft at the cruise condition.
