ESDU 84027
Endurance of fibre-reinforced composite, laminated structural elements subjected to simulated random acoustic loading.
Abstract:
Random applicable fatigue endurance data are presented in the form of plots of rms strain against cycles to failure. The data presented are the results of fatigue tests on fibre-reinforced composite specimens, and fibre metal laminated specimens, excited using narrow-band excitation of random amplitude, with zero mean, to simulate response to acoustic loading. Ceramic matrix composites are also considered. Test data are within the endurance range 103 to 108 cycles. The types of specimen considered are plain specimens and specimens representative of both bonded and riveted skin-rib construction, typical of aircraft structural elements. The data are intended for guidance in the design against acoustic fatigue. Details are given of the elements tested, the method of testing and the method of failure identification.Example applications include stack (chimneys) and process plant towers, lighting standards, elements of lattice structures and pipes spanning ducts. Several worked examples are included together with guidance on the required input data.Format: PDF and interactive graphs.
