ESDU FAT E.05.06
Endurance of bonded lap joints. (Aluminium alloy sheet material; phenolic resin/vinyl powder glue, tensile loading.)
Abstract:
ESDU Fat E.05.06 presents curves of alternating stress against endurance obtained from an analysis of 280 constant amplitude room temperature tests of joints with adherends 0.033 to 0.082 in (0.08 to 2 mm) thick (t) glued over a length (l) of 0.375 to 1.96 in (10 to 50 mm). The stress ratio lay between zero and 0.22. The clad sheet material was either naturally-aged Al-Cu-Mg 2024-T3 or artificially-aged Al-Zn-Mg 7075-T6. Four sets of mean endurance curves are given for failure in the glue, each set for one value of adherend thickness and a range of values of l/t. However, for two adherend thicknesses, sets of curves are also included for failure in the adherend. The average shear stress in the glue for a given tensile stress in the adherends and l/t may also be read off the curves. A worked example illustrates the use of the data.Indexed under:
