Pitching velocity derivatives for wings at supersonic speeds Zq and Mq
Abstract:
ESDU Aero W.S.08.03.02 gives curves of the derivatives plotted for straight-tapered wings with streamwise tips as a function of the wing aspect ratio, the sweep angle of the mid-chord line and the freestream Mach number. The five sets of curves for each derivative apply to values of wing taper ratio of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1. The derivatives relate to pitching about the wing apex and equations are provided to correct values read from the curves to relate to pitching about an arbitrary axis; their use requires values of lift-curve slope and aerodynamic centre position which may be obtained from ESDU 70012. The data are derived by use of linearised theory and are extrapolated using slender wing theory to apply to low values of the product of the aspect ratio and the compressibility factor. There are no experimental data to support the results but indirect evidence suggests they are of acceptable accuracy. A worked example illustrates the use of the data.Indexed under:
