ESDU 94017
Selection of materials, manufacturing methods and lubricants for cam mechanisms.
Abstract:
ESDU 94017 presents information on the selection of suitable materials, manufacturing methods (including profile generation and surface treatment) and lubricants for cam mechanisms. A pair of design procedures (presented as flowcharts) for evaluating the performance of a disc cam with a spring loaded follower are included. Use of the procedures should reduce the risk of surface failure by pitting, scuffing or polishing. If a needle-bearing roller follower is present, the failure of this component by internal fatigue can also be predicted. The procedures make use of contact stress data (obtained using ESDU 93001 or 94011), roller life data (obtained using ESDU 91026) and lubricant film thickness data (obtained using ESDU 94008). Extensive notes on the interpretation of the data and a comprehensive series of suggestions for improving existing cam designs are also given. Two worked examples illustrate the use of the methods and the design guidance.Indexed under:
