ESDU 92037
Calculation methods for externally pressurised (hydrostatic) journal bearings with capillary restrictor control. (Guide to use of computer program A9237.)
Abstract:
ESDU 92037 provides details of a computer program, ESDUpac A9237, that implements the calculation method of ESDU 92026. It allows performance analysis of an existing design, or the design of a bearing to meet both stiffness and overload capacity requirements in which case suitable bearing and capillary restrictor dimensions are recommended. The predicted performance includes the journal displacement under load, the power loss, the lubricant flow rate, and the bearing and lubricant temperatures. Warning messages are output in the following cases, for each of which possible remedial actions are suggested: risk of cavitation, lubricant temperature outside usable range, bearing temperature too high, journal displacement too great, risk of half speed whirl, turbulent bearing or capillary flow, ratio of flow resistance in capillary restrictor to that in recess outside the range of 0.5 to 1.5. A lubricant database is provided that may be extended or edited. The program applies to Newtonian lubricants with laminar flow in the film and capillary restrictors. Worked examples illustrate the use of the program.Indexed under:
