Boundary walls, fences and hoardings: mean and peak wind loads and overturning moments.
Abstract:
ESDU 89050 gives graphical data for peak and area-averaged mean forces on panels in infinite walls, panels near the free end of a semi-infinite wall, panels near a right-angled corner, finite length walls, elevated panels and pairs of parallel walls. Peak design loads are obtained by using the peak forces in conjunction with the design hourly-mean wind speed. The data were derived from wind-tunnel test results extracted from the literature in which the typical variation of wind speed and turbulence with height was modelled. The correlation yielded a mean force that depended on the flow angle to the wall and the terrain upwind, and a peak fluctuating component that depended on the turbulence and the panel size in relation to the mean wind speed. Corresponding mean and peak overturning moments are estimated from the centre of pressure position data given for each configuration. A step-by-step worked example illustrates the use of the correlation to estimate the forces on a typical wall. The basis of the analysis of the experimental data is explained.Indexed under:
