ESDU 84031
Calculation methods for steadily loaded axial groove hydrodynamic journal bearings.
Abstract:
ESDU 84031 gives a calculation method by which a bearing can be designed to meet a required performance specification, or the performance of an existing design can be analysed. Guidance is given on the choice of an appropriate lubricant, the overall bearing size and proportions, the clearance under running conditions, and the groove dimensions. The calculation method yields the eccentricity ratio, the power loss and lubricant flow rate from which the bearing and lubricant temperatures are then derived, and the lubricant film thickness. The method is valid for laminar flow operation and a graph indicates the bearing operating conditions for transition to superlaminar flow; ESDU 85028 extends the method to deal with performance in superlaminar flow. Criteria for minimum film thickness and maximum temperature are also provided. The use of the method is illustrated with a number of practical worked examples, and flowcharts assist its application. See ESDU 93005 for a Fortran program of this calculation method.Indexed under:
