Abstract:

ESDU 78026 is one of a group of five dealing with this topic. A self-contained bearing assembly is one from which all heat is lost by convection and radiation from the external surfaces only and no heat is removed by lubricant or coolant flows. ESDU 78026 outlines the methods of ESDU 78027 to 78029 and gives a flowchart to guide the user through those documents to obtain a solution. Methods of reducing the temperature by either reducing the heat generated or by improving the heat dissipation are discussed. ESDU 79002 gives comprehensive worked examples illustrating the use of the methods.
