Fluctuating loads and dynamic response of bodies and structures in fluid flows - background information.
Abstract:
ESDU 77032 provides a comprehensive introduction to this subject. After discussing some common fluctuating force phenomena such as buffeting, galloping, flutter and vortex shedding, methods of reducing flow-induced oscillations are considered. Model testing is outlined and requirements, and possible relaxation of them, for similarity explained. A table summarises situations in which dynamic effects are important depending on type of structure and the disturbance input. The mathematical approach using normal mode analysis is introduced and the concept of force derivatives due to structure motion explained. The calculation of response due to external forces is discussed, with the particular case of turbulence treated in depth. The mechanical characteristics of the structures required for these calculations are explained. A bibliography lists some 175 references on various aspects of the problem.Indexed under:
