Ground-test machine operating on water-covered runway surface:
Application of ESDU 23002
Abstract:
This Data Item is a worked example that describes the application of the tyre-runway model in ESDU 23002, entitled "Tyre braking on dry or water-covered runways - summary of ESDU tyre-runway modelling", to a conceptual ground-test machine that measures the decelerating forces acting on its wheels when it operates on a water-covered runway. The machine consists of both a free and a braked wheel. The ESDU 23002 model is used to derive the water depth on the runway surface from the decelerating forces measured on each of the wheels during operation.
Whilst the ground-test machine used in this example is purely conceptual in nature, its details are representative of devices that are in use. Additionally, the decelerating forces that are assumed to be acting on each wheel of the machine are representative of those of such a device for the water depths encountered in the example.
This Data Item forms part of a series of worked examples illustrating the application of the model described in ESDU 23002 for estimating resistive forces acting against a tyre operating on a runway surface. ESDU 23009, entitled "Aircraft braking on dry runway - application of ESDU 23002", and ESDU 23010, entitled "Aircraft tyre in linear motion braking on water-covered runway - application of ESDU 23002", are further worked examples.
