Guide to the effect of shot peening on fatigue strength
Abstract:
ESDU 19004, which supersedes ESDU 92015, introduces the process of shot peening including an examination of the parameters (shot material, size and velocity, and exposure time and component hardness) that affect the resultant plastic deformation and residual compressive stresses that form near the surface. The use of the Almen strip to assess shot peening intensity is explained. The effects on surface condition are considered and the need to anticipate, at the design stage, the use of shot peening is described. Data extracted from the literature are presented graphically. For aluminium alloys, most of the data are presented as stress-endurance curves under constant amplitude loading for test specimens (including welded joints) with and without shot peening. The influence of various pre- and post-treatments such as polishing, heat treatment and stretching is discussed. The effects of fretting and salt water on endurance is given, and on one graph the endurance of a 7075 aluminium alloy is plotted against Almen intensity. For steels, the stress-endurance data are plotted for test specimens (and welded joints) with and without shot peening and the effect of post-stretching is included for one case. For a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, the effect of fretting and elevated temperature on endurance with and without shot peening is given. For each set of data, details of the material specification, specimen geometry and test conditions used are provided.Indexed under:
