ESDU 03010
Timing diagrams and their use in mechanism design.
Abstract:
ESDU 03010 describes a means of constructing timing diagrams which are a sequence of simple graphs drawn to a common time base used to evaluate and define the operation of an assembly of mechanisms and, possibly electro-mechanical devices, hydraulically or pneumatically actuated devices forming part of a machine, or a complete machine. These diagrams provide a methodical means, during the design of new machinery or the revision of the performance of an existing machine, of determining the operating requirements to be met and the constraints imposed by the principal functions within the design. The construction of a timing diagram can begin at the conceptual stage of a machine design, starting from an incomplete initial assessment of the information that is known, and can proceed to a final version, which provides a concise definition of the operation of a production version of the machine design. The Item presents a number of worked examples to illustrate the use of timing diagrams, to highlight the main features of their construction and to bring out their value in making informed design decisions.Indexed under:
