ESDU 76033
Subsonic base drag of cylindrical bodies with conical boat-tails.
Abstract:
ESDU 76033 gives curves derived by correlating experimental data from a number of different sources enabling the base drag coefficient, based on body maximum cross-sectional area, to be predicted to within 0.025. Two sets of curves are given, one for boat-tail angles below 16 degrees and one for angles exceeding 16 degrees; the drag depends on the ratio of base to maximum diameter, and boat-tail angle. The data were found to be independent of Mach number below 0.8 and it proved impossible to isolate any Reynolds number effects.
Software for the method is provided as Toolbox Boat-tail Pressure Drag and ESDUpac A7633.
