ESDU 87037
Take-off performance of vectored-jet-thrust V/STOL aircraft.
Abstract:
ESDU 87037 presents the more important aspects specific to vectored-jet-thrust, including the estimation and presentation of short take-off (STO) and "ski-jump" (curved ramp) modes. It concentrates on the calculation of airborne distance and on optimising the overall distance from rest to the take-off screen (for STO). The corresponding optimisation processes for ship-based operations are also given. The implications of the configuration for STO performance, through the effect on airframe aerodynamics and arising from the special requirements on the powerplant, are discussed. The method of calculation is unique and is based on the possibility with such an aircraft of measuring steady "point" performance at airspeeds down to zero. Non-dimensional methods are used in the analysis, calculation and presentation of take-off performance and depend on the special feature that with this configuration a simple, direct measure of installed thrust is possible in hover. Methods used to account for jet-induced forces are described.Indexed under:
