ESDU Stress and Strength Series
The ESDU Stress and Strength Series covers the stress analysis and strength of components used in general mechanical engineering. In common with the entire ESDU product, the analytical methods and data provided have been rigorously validated by independent experts.
The design of commonly used components such as struts, beams, shafts, plates, pressure vessels, pipes, fastenings, welds and springs is covered. The methods and data provided relate to stiffnesses, static stresses and deflections, buckling loads and fatigue strengths. Design notes and methodology are covered.
Stress intensity factors, including a complete reproduction of Rooke and Cartwright's compendium, are provided. There is also a section dealing with contact stresses.
A significant part of the Series deals with the fatigue strength of materials. Constant amplitude stress versus endurance (S-N) curves are provided for many low and high alloy and stainless steels made to US, UK and European specifications. Information on linear elastic fracture mechanics is provided, along with crack propagation rate data and fracture toughness values
All information on stresses, deflections, stiffnesses and buckling loads is applicable to the usual metallic materials used in engineering and to other isotropic materials such as glass, rubber or plastic.
