Falcon 20: rolling on dry and snow-covered surfaces
Abstract:
A simplified model of forces due to idling power, aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance is obtained from speed and acceleration data in ground testing on the Falcon 20. The model is applicable from speeds near to zero to at least 200 ft/s. The overall system of instrumentation and aircraft configuration may be expected to be capable of providing decelerating forces with a precision of ±250 lbf at the 95% confidence level. In conjunction with effects of mechanical properties of snow, the model is used to calculate total decelerating forces arising when rolling on snow-covered runways. Resulting accelerations are integrated over time to produce histories of speed that compare well with measured data.
