ESDU 90002
Struts: strength under flexural, local and inter-rivet buckling.
Abstract:
ESDU 90002 introduces a Fortran program, provided in both compiled and uncompiled forms as ESDUpac A9002, for calculating the flexural buckling strength, and the local and inter-rivet buckling stresses, of uniform section struts. For flexural failure account is taken of any design bow, loading offset and/or manufacturing tolerances which can act together or in opposition. A method is suggested for estimating those tolerances when they are unknown. For local buckling those parts of the strut section that are effectively flat strips are considered (simply-supported on both edges, or with one edge simply-supported and one free). For inter-rivet buckling the section must be fabricated from one material (or from materials with very similar stress/strain characteristics) and account is taken of the fixity effect due to different rivet types. The inelastic behaviour of the material is accounted for through the generalised stress/strain curve of ESDU 76016. Interaction between buckling modes is not considered. The required geometric properties of the section may be calculated by the program, or input directly. In the former case changes to the section can be made and their effect carried through the calculations. Two worked examples illustrate the use of the program and the input/output formats. The theory is outlined, program testing is discussed, and warning messages output in extreme cases when program failure could occur are indicated.Indexed under:
